Madonna's politics couldn't have surprised New Orleans fans ...

Madonna sings "Give Me All Your Luvin'/Express Yourself" during her MDNA Tour stop at the New Orleans Arena Oct. 27. (Photo by David Grunfeld, The Times-Picayune/NOLA.com)

"Madonna surely might have been expected to be particularly provocative in New Orleans. In fact, she was disappointingly inoffensive."

If that walk-out from Madonna's concert at the Arena last Saturday was a PR stunt, it certainly worked.?The publicity was probably worth many times whatever Madonna's handlers might have paid audience members to fake outrage and flounce off into the night.

News reports and on-line comments suggested the protest over a pro-President Barrack Obama aside was spontaneous. But that would require us to believe that some of Madonna's fans are more than a bit simple.

While that is not entirely beyond the bounds of possibility, to be shocked that Madonna should veer into politics bespeaks a lamentable unfamiliarity with her career. It is no secret that there is more to a Madonna concert than the gyrations of an aging frame and shaky renditions of ancient hits.

Her most prominent recent causes are the imprisoned Russian punk band Pussy Riot and Malala Yousafzai, the 14-year-old Pakistani the Taliban tried to murder for advocating girls' education. Whether they benefit from the media coverage is debatable, but she certainly does.

Her current tour, which began in Tel Aviv several months ago, has courted controversy at every stop. Just before she arrived in New Orleans, she was in Colorado, where the simulated gunfire in her show struck some, so soon after the Aurora massacre, as somewhat crass.

She got everyone's attention, though, and Madonna's press agent, Liz Rosenberg, was wheeled out to explain that the gun scenes were essential for artistic integrity. Removing them, she said, would be like excising Act 3 of Hamlet. Never having seen Madonna's show, yours truly is going out on a limb here to suggest that the analogy with Shakespeare could only be made by a wisecracking showbiz flak.

Act 3 of Hamlet has "To be or not to be," whereas Madonna's show, according to our reviewer, features a great deal of "audiovisual bang" with "hydraulics, fire, lasers, break-dancing clowns, contortionists, acrobatic slackwire-walking, gunfire" and other delights.

After decades of controversy, including a generous helping of Catholic bashing, Madonna surely might have been expected to be particularly provocative in New Orleans. In fact, she was disappointingly inoffensive. The burden of the complaints from those who booed, and walked out, was they paid to hear her sing, and not to advance a political agenda. That is a most eccentric frame of mind in which to show up at one of her gigs.

All she said anyway was that she didn't care how her fans voted in the election, so long as they voted for Obama. That Madonna was for the Democrats was not exactly classified information, but she then backed off and declared she didn't care who got her fans' vote. She just urged everyone to go to the polls, which is what every editorial page in the country does before every election. Hardly a bold stance. Madonna was really starting to sound like an old woman.

But by then a chunk of the audience was in quite a huff and took off. This is unlikely to have caused Madonna any material distress. Tickets cost up to $400, and there were no refunds for leaving at half time. They call Republicans pachyderms, but the ones who go to Madonna gigs are so thin-skinned they'll cut off their noses to spite their faces. The media coverage just made them look dumb.

But not Madonna, who is such a gifted publicity hog that she will probably still be selling out concerts when she's 100. She cannot have expected that anyone in her audience would vote for Obama because she said so, and it wouldn't have mattered anyway. If the whole arena had fallen in line, Romney would still have carried Louisiana.

It is not necessary to have been in the business as long as Madonna to realize that pop stars who dabble in politics seldom change minds. Indeed, venturing into politics can be devastating for a career, as the Dixie Chicks discovered when their opposition to the Iraq war was taken as treason. Such stars as John Mellencamp and Neil Young saw ticket sales plummet when they urged giving President Bush the heave-ho in 2004.

So maybe nobody had to pay the fans to walk out. But it probably suits Madonna just fine that they did.

State says go home and sleep, 24/7 Egypt resists

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's capital prides itself on being city that never sleeps, with crowds filling cafes and shops open into till the small hours. So, the government is facing a backlash from businesses and the public as it vows to impose new nationwide rules closing stores and restaurants early.

Officials say the step is necessary to conserve electricity in a nation buckling under economic crisis and fuel shortages. But the decision has a strong undercurrent of social control: A desire by secular conservatives and Islamists alike to tame a population they see as too unruly, especially in a post-revolution atmosphere of strikes, protests and relentless demands on a beleaguered government.

Simply put, officials say, Egyptians should stop thinking they can do whatever they want, should go to sleep early and work in the morning.

"Egyptian life has turned nocturnal. Egypt should not be a nocturnal state, but a morning state like all countries," Legal Affairs Minister Mohammed Mahsoub, an Islamist, told reporters on Wednesday. "Energy, endeavor, labor and working hard should be the foundation."

"I call on all those thinking of opposing this to think about themselves ? when should they wake up and go to sleep and when do their kids go to bed and wake up," he said. "This is really a behavioral issue."

He and other officials said the regulations will come into effect on Saturday. Under the new rules, shops would be required to close at 10 p.m. and restaurants and cafes at midnight. Businesses that have a tourism license ? which comes at a fee ? would be exempted, meaning that most bars and upscale restaurants would stay open later. Violators would face a fine and, if they persist, closure.

But many are furious over what they see as an outright violation of the nation's psyche.

The proposed regulation has dominated the national conversation for weeks. Opponents, including chambers of commerce around the country, warn that it will damage an already suffering economy. Those who work night shifts will lose their jobs and, with Egyptians unable to shop late, sales will be stifled and small businesses will be forced to lay off workers, they say.

Others argue that it is biased against the poor, given that venues catering to rich Egyptians will be able to get tourist licenses ? which are not necessarily linked to actual business with tourists ? at a time when small business owners are struggling to make ends meet because of the economic crisis.

"I wish that President Mohammed Morsi would make decisions that put the poor people ahead of the rich," said Ibrahim Mohammed, referring to the country's Islamist leader, now in his fourth month in office. Mohammed owns a street kiosk that sells cookies and cigarettes in central Cairo and stays open until midnight.

Opponents argue it will be virtually be impossible to enforce. Cairo, home to an estimated 18 million people, has hundreds of thousands of small businesses found on almost every street, alley and lane. Some, like eateries, juice shops and pharmacies, never close. Night-owl Egyptians are accustomed to being able to buy virtually anything, while away the time at a coffee shop or even get a haircut at any time of night.

Some warn that penalties could even spark violence at a time when Morsi's government is struggling to restore law and order amid the turmoil since last year's fall of longtime leader Hosni Mubarak.

"Maybe the government will try to force this on us, but that will never work with Egyptians," said Anwar Eid, whose spices and dry goods store in Cairo's middle class Dokki district has been in the family for seven generations.

In the working class neighborhood of Imbaba, a waiter at a street cafe that's open 24 hours was fuming.

"What are the people who work the late night shifts supposed to do? Our salaries will go down. How will we find more work?" Ibrahim Saeed said. "We already have problems with unemployment and with crime. How will this help? The government issues decisions and that's it, they don't say why."

Officials have presented the regulation as a vital energy-saving step. Egypt has been plagued by widespread electricity cutoffs, in part because of overburdening on its facilities, just one of multiple breakdowns in the nation's infrastructure. Moreover, the government is trying to reduce crushing budget deficits as it struggles to revive an economy hard-hit since last year's revolution ? and fuel for power plants is a heavy cost.

Local Development Minister Ahmed Zaki Abdin, a non-Islamist who served as a provincial governor under Mubarak, said closing up earlier would save the government more than $1 billion a year ? though opponents have questioned whether the move would really conserve much energy.

But the move goes beyond economics to try to impose some control over a society in chaos.

"You can't have people staying up all night in cafes. People should be going to bed early so they can do their work," Abdin insisted.

"We can't just keep on doing whatever we want whenever we want ... We're passing through tough circumstances. We have an economic crisis. We have an energy shortage. We have problems everywhere, strikes, unrest, demands. Can't anyone make a compromise?" he said in a TV interview this month.

Past governments have made attempts to regulate business hours in hopes of injecting a semblance of order to Cairo. But in the end, they backed down in the face of business opposition and public uproar. Some are convinced Morsi's government will do the same.

If implemented, the regulation could become an issue in parliamentary elections now expected early next year, as parties try to appeal to small businessmen and their employees angry over the early closing hours.

"This regulation is a huge mistake," said Ashraf Shaaban, who runs a falafel sandwich in Imbaba. "It is against the nature of the Egyptian people. We stay up late. We don't want a curfew."

As he quickly whipped up sandwiches for a line of customers, he added: "If men spend their evenings at home rather than at cafes, the population will grow. There will be more babies."

"Morsi is insulting the people!" shouted one of his customers.

Resume Cover Letters: How To Use A "Thanksgiving" Cover Letter

? Written By Jimmy Sweeney

President of CareerJimmy.com

Hungry job seekers focus their cover letters on what they want, what they expect, and what they can do. Then they wait for the phone to ring to book an interview. That's one way to approach the job search market.?

?

Essential as these points are, however, they're not nearly as effective as opening and closing a cover letter with two simple words?THANK YOU.

?

Why say thank you when you don't know the hiring manager and you don't have the job yet? Here's why. Behind every desk in every company sits a human being just like you, a person with hopes and dreams, plans and challenges, and a desire to be acknowledged and appreciated.

?

One day your cover letter will land on his or her desk. Will you jump off the page as a person ideal for the job, a team player, someone who'll be a great addition to the staff? I hope so, but more important, will you come across as someone who has a humble and grateful attitude, an individual who recognizes the value of an opportunity, the privilege of holding a job and working with others toward a common goal? That profile is what every hiring manager is looking for.

Giving Thanks Could Land You a Job!

Thank you. These two simple words seem to be in hiding because they so rarely appear in public! But they are golden, even more so than your resume, skills, and qualifications?because they set the stage for what is to come. What man or woman wouldn't respond to someone who is polite, personal, and professional?

?

Following are examples of how to express your thanks at the beginning of your cover letter and at the end.

?

Dear Mr. Hiring Manager:

?

Thank you for taking a moment to read my cover letter. I'm pleased to meet you here and hope to do so in person. I was happy to see on careerjimmy.com your listing for an administrative assistant?a position for which I feel qualified and eager to fill.??

?

Thank you again for reading my letter and resume and for considering me for the job. May I come in for an interview so I can hear your perspective on this position and the qualities you're looking for in the person you hire? I can be available any time that works for you. I appreciate this opportunity very much.

?

Example #2:

Dear Mr. Hiring Manager:

?

Thank you for posting on careerjimmy.com such a clear description of the opening for an administrative assistant now available at your company. I was able to tell at a glance that this job is just what I've been looking for and feel qualified to fill.

?

You must receive hundreds of cover letters every week??all the more reason for me to thank you again for taking time to read mine and for considering me for the position of executive secretary on your administrative staff. I'd welcome the opportunity to meet with you in person for an interview so we can discuss what I can bring to the job and what you expect from the person you hire.

?

After sending off your cover letter, take a moment to expand your thanks silently.?

?

??????? For the job that is waiting for you, even if you haven't landed it yet

??????? For the person who will hire you when the time comes

?

??????? For the experience, talent, and skill you have to earn a living

?

??????? For the people in your life who love and support you

?

Thanksgiving Day is not the only time to give thanks. Move gratitude to the top of your list at home, at work, and in the community and you will find what you're looking for in the job market and in your relationships.

Workshop on spectroscopic techniques for actinides research in Dresden, Germany, from Nov. 5 - 7, 2012

Research on radioactive heavy metals in environmental systems considers diverse tasks, e.g. restoration measures for contaminated industrial fallow grounds, the safe storage of chemical-toxic and radioactive waste, carbon dioxide sequestration to reduce green-house gas emissions as well as the construction and operation of deep geothermal power plants. The research activities are based, on the one hand, on experimental investigations; on the other hand, theoretical modelling is of great interest.

According to Katharina Mller from the Institute of Resource Ecology at HZDR, there has not been much overlap so far between theory and experiments in this field, although they often give complementary information and, hence, they can contribute to a better understanding of the behaviour of heavy metals in the environment. Together with Robin Steudtner and Satoru Tsushima, she is organizing the new workshop, which hopefully will bundle and strengthen the respective research activities and act as a nucleus for an international network.

The first international workshop "Advanced Techniques in Actinide Spectroscopy" (ATAS) at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf will take place from November 5 to 7, 2012. The organizers are expecting about 75 scientists from Europe, the US, Australia, Japan and China. They are satisfied with the interest in the kick-off workshop: "It seems that we hit a nerve for more intense scientific cooperation in this area".

The workshop consists of seven sessions with oral and poster presentations by international scientists. The Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) conducts research in the fields of matter, health and energy. The following issues provide the main focus here:

  • How does matter behave in strong fields and at small-scale dimensions?
  • How can malignant tumors be identified at an early stage and treated effectively?
  • How can resources and energy be used safely and efficiently?

To answer these scientific questions, five large-scale research facilities provide, in part, unique research opportunities. These facilities are also accessible to external users.

The HZDR has been a member of the Helmholtz Association (the largest scientific organization in Germany) since January 2011. It has four locations in Dresden, Leipzig, Freiberg and Grenoble, and employs around 900 people approx. 430 of these being scientists and doctoral candidates.

The next wave: Google refreshes its Nexus line

Android CentralThere won't be a launch event, but that doesn't mean launches aren't happening. Google today announced a new Nexus phone, along with a new tablet -- and updated a current one. Here's the breakdown of what you need to know:

  • Nexus 4 by LG: There's not a whole lot about this phone we didn't know, but it's now official. You'll be able to get an unlocked Nexus 4 starting Nov. 13. There's an 8GB version for $299, and a 16GB version for $349. There currently are no LTE versions, but it's coming to T-Mo U.S. on contract. UK prices start at £239.
  • Nexus 7 refreshed: This guy's been around for a few months now. The bottom end is now a 16GB version for $199, and 32GB for $249. You can find it in various retailers already.
  • Nexus 10 announced: Samsung's back with a 10-inch Nexus tablet. Pure Google. It's running $399 for a 16GB version, and $499 for a 32GB model. It'll be available Nov. 13 in the U.S., UK, Australia, France, Germany, Spain, Canada and Japan. In the UK, prices start at £319.
  • Android 4.2: And, of course, we've got a new update to Android. It's still called Jelly Bean. New features include "photo sphere" for the camera, which basically is a 360-degree panorama. The keyboard's gained gesture typing and improved prediction. There's a new "Daydream" feature for when your device is docked. Tablets get support for multiple users. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

Famed for their classic cookbooks that have a home in every Australian kitchen, they are a go-to for easy, comforting recipes and the release of their latest cookbook, Fresh Food Fast, is certainly no exception.

Fresh Food Fast is based on the concept that eating fresh and tasty food doesn?t have to be an arduous task. The book is broken down into four sections, Starters, Mains, Sides and Desserts, with handy divider tabs.

The book is laid out beautifully ? filled with bright, clear and vibrant photos that will be sure to have your mouth watering. Each section is divided into smaller sections, which aren?t as clearly marked. This doesn?t make too much of a difference in accessing recipes as the book also has a fantastic index at the back.

The Starters section is packed with light dishes that you can whip together in minutes. From a range of pasta dishes, to tasty bruschetta and sweet potato crisps, your next barbeque won?t be complete without them.

The Main sections contains a wide range of summer-appropriate meals. Mouth-watering, new takes on chicken salad, warm Singapore noodles, and even twists on classic lamb chops form a few of the recipes that will keep you well fed all summer long.

The Sides section includes easy to prepare dishes that look impressive when placed on the table. The section includes recipes such as prosciutto wrapped bean bundles, effortless Greek salad and Spicy Roasted Pumpkin Couscous.

The Desserts section is a wonderful homage to original Women?s Weekly recipes. With summery twists on the classic banana split, grilled pineapple and chocolate mousse, you?ll have comfort food in a flash.

The greatest thing about the book is that the nutritional information for each recipe is included. The book also suggests alternatives? to certain ingredients, and offers adjustments for many of their recipes.? The recipes are clean and clear and seriously will have you salivating over the wide variety of tasty easy to prepare meals, bursting with succulent flavourful options. So far we?ve cooked, the coriander and chilli grilled chicken fillets (p187), chicken laksa (p195), sesame chicken salad (p200), and we?re busting to cook this weekend the pumpkin and corn patties (p108).

With summer backyard party season just about to begin, this book is a perfect way to impress the family.

Android 4.2: Still Jelly Bean, but sweeter

9 hrs.

Along with a small mountain of new Nexus devices, Google announced also?Android 4.2 on Monday. It's still called Jelly Bean, just like the prior version, but it's made just a little bit sweeter by the addition of new?features such as Photo Sphere, Gesture Typing, multi-user support and more.

Photo Sphere
Like iOS, Android now has a baked-in tool that'll help you create panoramic images.?In Android 4.2, you can take photos in any direction???an?improvement?on the panorama feature in iOS 6???and?they'll be put together into "photo spheres," which allow someone to explore the images you took as a 360-degree environment. (If you've ever used Microsoft's?Photosynth app, it sounds a lot like that.)

Gesture Typing
Plenty of third-party keyboards, such as Swype, offer users the ability to type by dragging their fingers across the on-screen keyboard, and now this feature's built right into Android.?Additionally, the new keyboard will "anticipate and predict the next word" you intend on typing so that you can simply select suggested words without even needing to type.

Multi-user support on tablets
Sharing an Android tablet with a family member will be significantly less awkward thanks to multi-user support. Each user can have his or her own homescreen, background, widgets, apps and?games. Toggling between users is supposedly as easy as switching between apps.

Wireless Display
Android 4.2 has a Wireless Display feature, similar to Apple's AirPlay, which allows you to share movies, YouTube clips, and whatever else might be on your screen to an HDTV. You'll just need to attach a little adapter to any HDMI-enabled TV and you're set to mirror content.

Daydream
Daydream is described as something that allows your Android device to "display useful and delightful information when idle or docked." It sounds like a snazzy screensaver, basically.

Souped-up notifications
Swiping down on your Android device reveals the notification pane. And now you can instantly take an action directly from that spot. This means that if you spot a missed call, you'll also see a button allowing you to return it.

When do I get this?
No word as to when Android 4.2 will become available for various Android devices, but we do know that the new Nexus lineup, which ships on Nov. 13, will be pre-loaded with the latest version of Jelly Bean.

Additional thoughts on Digital Millennium Copyright Act - Typepad

I found Dhiraj?s "Jail breaking your iPad is now illegal" post very interesting. I actually have never heard of ?jailbreaking,? until I read his post. I have to admit I am not tech savvy but I do own an iPad which I bought primarily for the convenience, flexibility and portability of my everyday life vs. using a laptop. I guess at this point I am not in need of any other software not already available to me on the iPad, therefore never really thought about the need to ?jailbreak? the device. I also didn?t realize that the law could impact how I want to use the device. However, I do clearly remember wanting to ?jailbreak? my phone numerous times prior to the time the law allowed me to do so. I don?t want to be required to purchase another device to meet a new need not offered by my current device or by my current provider. I want to be able to ?legally? purchase any software available and install it on my iPad (or any other device) just as I can apparently do on my phone.

I agree with Dhiraj?s comment that these laws potentially ?kill off innovation and development talent especially in the developer community.? In addition, I would add that this could hurt consumers and increase the chance of monopoly and/or anti-trust issues. This might be extreme and the time/technology might be completely different with this issue but the anti-trust issues for Microsoft and Nintendo come to mind. It seems as though this law is a ?win? for manufacturers. Under this law any manufacturer of ?tablets? is incentivized to have a ?superior? tablet but more importantly ?superior? software ? as the law does not allow the transfer of the software once purchased to any other tablet. The cost of providing both is likely prohibitive for small/star-up businesses, but the cost of developing or providing one or the other might not be. If a business could manage to achieve both a ?superior? tablet and ?superior? software, both of which would enjoy the protection of copyright laws, it would lead to higher demand and price, which is a bad result to consumers. It seems as though this law could result in higher prices and lower flexibility for consumers.

Another thing I found interesting in Dhiraj?s post was ?The new rules also forbid personal copying of DVDs.? I might be na?ve but I always assumed if I purchased a DVD (copyrighted material) ? I could watch that DVD on any device, even if it meant ?copying? it in a format that could be used on another device. I do this all the time with music ? I didn?t actually realize there is a difference with movies, but I haven?t ever tried to do it I guess? I am just wondering how the ?first-sale-doctrine? would apply in this situation (and others at it relates to the personal use software ? unless specifically noted in the terms of the software agreement) and whether the new regulations under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act could be considered in some way conflicted? It doesn?t seem reasonable to me that I would have to buy one copy of the material that could be viewed on my TV at home via DVD and then another copy that I could view on my iPad to stay within the law. Again I am not tech savvy so might be off in this analysis.

My last comment is that I find it a bit unreasonable that these laws are only reviewed every three years. Technology is changing so fast, there is no way a comprehensive review of the law can only be done every 3 years. These days, a new item may be introduced and then obsolete in 3 years and therefore never be reviewed. The fact that the tablet issue will not be addressed again until 2015 is ridiculous because, just as Dhiraj mentions, tablets may be even more adapted than smartphones are today. It seems more reasonable that these laws be reviewed more frequently.

HomeGain Blog? Blog Archive ? Portable Home Alarm Systems for ...

Vacant homes can be a security risk for both agents and customers. However, there are options to keep you both safe. More real estate agents are turning to portable home alarm systems to help minimize these risks. While considering alarms, it is important to do what you can to keep the home from being a target. Security is best done in layers.

Secure in layers
Consider the first layer of home security while staging a vacant home; it is important to maintain a ?lived-in? look from the street. This can be done by putting lamps on timers or using basic home automation lamp modules that turn on and off at different times. Put porch lights on a dawn-to-dusk sensor, to illuminate the front of the home at night. A porch light left on all day is a dead giveaway for a vacant home.

Keep the yard landscaping clean and trimmed and gates locked. Enlist the neighbor?s help if appropriate. Asking them to help keep an eye on the house, parking in the driveway periodically and contacting you if there are any concerns. Building relationships with neighbors may benefit you in the future, and it gives the neighbors a sense of community in their neighborhood.

The second layer should include alarm signs and window stickers. These tell a potential prowler that they will not have much time to hang around if they decide to break in. They often act as a deterrent all together. Place stickers on front and side windows and on back doors or windows. Yard signs should be in clear view of the street and in a back yard with alley access.

The third layer is to use an alarm system. Decide whether you want to self-monitor or have the system monitored professionally. If you want affordable professional monitoring, there are companies that offer these.

The biggest drawback to going with a ?standard? alarm company is that these systems often require a monitoring contract with penalties for breaking it. One company does offer month-to-month monitoring without a contract, making a Realtor?s life easier, its SimpliSafe.

Option 1: SimpliSafe
SimpliSafe is a wireless system that requires only electricity. The system utilizes GSM or cellular communications to the central monitoring center, battery operated sensors, and rechargeable back up batteries in the Base station means if the power goes out, the system will still work for up to two days.

Install and expand SimpliSafe easily for larger homes. It is great for Realtors since monitoring services are optional and it does not require a contract if you choose monthly monitoring.

The original basic system supports up to 26 devices and includes a wireless keypad and base station. Devices sold separately include door, window, motion sensor, yard signs and other devices.

SimpliSafe2 is the newest version that supports a larger number of sensors. With expanded functionality, SimpliSafe2 includes monitoring for fire and carbon monoxide, additional keypad support and remote alarm control for turning alarms on or off via your smartphone or computer. This is especially nice if you want to grant a colleague access to show one of your properties without giving out the alarm code.

Protection options include a panic button that alerts the monitoring center immediately of an emergency and dispatches police. A duress code, which you program, can be used if someone follows you in and insists you deactivate the alarm. This ?secret? code tells the monitoring center that you are in need of immediate help.

The company works with Realtors and states that agents can have as many accounts as needed. Activating and cancelling an account over the phone takes just a few minutes. It is protected by a 3-year product warranty and backed by a 60-day, no questions asked money back guarantee.

Option 2: Self-monitored systems
If you want to go the way of a self-monitored alarm system, there are many options. These systems usually consist of door and window sensors, motion detectors, keypads and an audible sounder.
The only difference between these and the monitored systems is they work without communicating to a central monitoring center.

The advantages of going with a self-monitored system are the elimination of false alarms to the police department. Central monitored systems do sound off if they are sensitive to heavy wind or large trucks driving by, sending the police if they cannot verify the disturbance with you. This can result in false alarm charges through your city; in addition, monitored alarms often require an annual alarm permit through the city, depending on your location.

Swann Home Wireless System
The Swann Home Wireless System includes all you need to alarm two doors or windows, and has two motion detectors, a keypad controller, siren, two keychain remote controls and eight window decals.

The keypad control panel requires an electrical outlet but the rest of the devices are battery operated. The system?s audible sounder is a loud 110dB that will sound for up to 20 minutes. Installation is easy and requires connecting the Anti-Intrusion sounder to the keypad with the supplied cable as well as positioning each sensor.

Swann has a large selection of add-on devices including extra door/window sensors, motion sensors and yard signs. The company also has a large selection of stand-alone alarm devices like ceiling mounted motion detectors, door and window alarms, and password protected door and motion detectors all with loud 110dB alarms built right in. Swann products are available through home improvement stores.

Iris Safe & Secure
The Iris Safe and Secure Kit, sold by Lowe?s, lets you secure two doors or windows, create an interior trap with a motion detector and includes a keypad and communications hub. The system offers remote access control via free smartphone applications.

In order to take advantage of the system?s remote access features, you do need to have a broadband connection in the home. Iris? basic service is free and provides alerts when alarms or triggers happen. Devices can be turned on or off remotely and doors can be locked or unlocked remotely when using compatible door locks.

Iris offers you two free months of Premium services upon activation. Premium services let you select up to six people to send customized alerts to, schedule devices such as add-on lighting control modules and set home modes for quick default settings such as ?night? and ?away.?

If you have locks set up on the system, you can set temporary pass codes for other agents or customers and receive notification when authorized users enter the home. Iris is available through Lowe?s Home Improvement stores and online.

No matter what security system you decide to use, be sure to take personal security measures when it comes to vacant homes. Keeping you and your customers safe is of paramount importance and your creativity could even help you gain new customers.

89% Frankenweenie

Question: Have you noticed the past few Tim Burton films are missing that quintessential essence we have grown to love over the last few decades? I can't quite put my finger as to why or what's gone awry, but I really haven't enjoyed his last few films until Frankenweenie! Yep, I saw this one and felt Tim Burton finally got back to his roots. Actually, I found out, after the fact, that this is a remake of a short film Burton did in 1984. Coincidence? Maybe. Perhaps I was able to connect to the story line in Burton's latest stop motion film. I am a huge dog lover and have unfortunately lost a couple of pets throughout my life. Actually my first dog, Auggie, died similarly to Sparky in Frankenweenie. Being the same age as Victor, I could feel his extreme pain over the loss of his best friend. Now I did not try to revive Auggie like Frankenstein's monster, but I completely empathized with the boy trying to fill the void by any means possible. This film is actually listed as horror (plus comedy and animation), and I will say for young children it would be wise for parents to heed that genre listing. Yes, it is rated PG, but for those young children who might scare easily this story is a bit on the dark side and quite intense at times. In fact, a girl and her father left during the film never to return. I noticed the stuffed animal in her hands and she was holding on to it for dear life as she briskly walked out of the theatre. My guess she was about 8 years-old. Now, my nearly 11-year old daughter had no qualms or fear of the story line and was delighted with the entire film. For the parents who see this film I imagine you will revel in some nostalgic memories that Frankenweenie will evoke. I don't want to give away too much but one character in this movie was based on and looks nearly identical to another character from one of the stop motion films from our youth. I will let you figure out which one. Also, there are others who were obviously based on classic horror film characters. I counted at least three but have a feeling there might be more. And I would probably know if their more if I knew a lot more about horror films, but sadly, I was not unlike the little 8 year-old who skedaddled out of the theatre when I was her age. All-in-all, Frankenweenie is the classic Frankenstein tale, no pun intended, so it won't win any originality awards, but there was a good message about loss, science and trying to obtain things for the wrong reasons. A good message for the youngsters out there - and perhaps for a few adults as well. My favorite part: The one character that reminded me of another character from my youth. My least favorite: That it reminded me of the loss of my first dog. Directed (original story) by Tim Burton, Walt Disney Pictures, 2012 Screenplay: Leonard Ripps, John August and Tim Burton. Starring: Martin Short, Catherine O'Hara, Winona Ryder and Martin Landau. Genre: Animation, Comedy, Horror and Sci-fi. Length: 87 minutes Rating: PG Review: 7 out of 10
