Stephanie Cutter: We Never Understood Why Romney Campaign Didn't Push Back On Bain Attacks

WASHINGTON -- Stephanie Cutter still doesn't understand why Mitt Romney's campaign did not more forcefully defend its candidate's business experience.

Cutter, who served as President Barack Obama's deputy campaign manager in the 2012 election, said on Friday that the Romney campaign's failure to aggressively respond to the attacks on Bain Capital was one of its biggest mistakes.

"I never understood why they never pushed back on our attacks on his business experience," Cutter said at the seventh annual RootsCamp conference for progressive organizers in Washington, D.C. "He ran largely on an argument that, 'I understand the real economy, I know how to fix this and the president doesn't -- he's never been in the real economy,' with his only credential his Bain experience."

The Obama campaign hammered Romney on Bain during the campaign, essentially painting the former Massachusetts governor as a corporate takeover artist who founded a firm that specialized in outsourced U.S. jobs.

While some prominent Democrats initially criticized the Obama campaign for "attacking private equity," the campaign didn't back down.

"We weren't making an argument ... that Bain was bad," Cutter said on Friday. "We were making an argument that this experience does not qualify you to be president of the United States or to understand the real economy. We obviously worked hard to tear that down, and they never built it back up. I never understood why."

Cutter isn't alone in her confusion on the Romney strategy. GOP political strategist Karl Rove, whose Crossroads groups spent more than $300 million in the 2012 election on candidates -- who, for the most part, lost -- also said on Fox News after the election that the Romney campaign should have fought back faster.

"The first group to respond to the attacks on Bain Capital was not the Romney campaign, it was American Crossroads with an ad in July. We don't do defense all that well," Rove said, adding that it was sometimes more effective to have the candidate appear in an ad and respond directly to the charges being leveled.

"I don't know if they didn't have a good understanding as to the deals that we were talking about, or the history of Romney at Bain, but I never understood why they didn't make a counter-argument to what we were saying -- which was his sole credential," Cutter said. "Remember, it was really the only thing he put on the table to qualify him as president."

Romney adviser Eric Fehrnstrom did not return a request for comment on Cutter's remarks.

After months of fervently trying to move the conversation away from Bain, the Romney campaign did finally bring it back in August. The Republican National Convention highlighted individuals connected to Bain who all portrayed Romney as a strong leader with integrity, and as someone who would be able to save a struggling U.S. economy just as he turned around failing businesses.

Cutter also pointed to Romney's rightward shift in the GOP primary as a problem, noting he was never fully able to recover.

Negotiation Style ? Commitment Matters

Earlier this week, I was reminded of a survey that IACCM undertook a few years ago exploring member attitudes to negotiation style. One of the key discoveries was that almost half were not even aware of the ?positional? and ?principled? terms that were used in the seminal work on negotiation, ?Getting to Yes?.

The reason I re-discovered the study was because of a question from?three MBA students at the Norwegian School of Entrepreneurship, who are studying what frameworks business managers and negotiators use when planning or conducting negotiations.

On reflection, I had to admit that I don?t spend much time thinking about these questions of style, because I?believe most b2b negotiations tend to be a hybrid. Also,?a discussion of preferred style seems to imply far more planning by the average negotiator than is really the case. In my experience, they are more often driven by the broader policies and practices of the organization than by any personal propensity for negotiating style. So, for example, if the company operates with strong ?powers reserved? by specific functions, the style is largely one of stone-walling.

Many large businesses?appear driven more by concepts such as avoidance, assertion or compromise. Value trading tends to be eliminated because of management and measurement systems.
Also, we have to bear in mind the fundamental shifts that there have been in business operations in the last 15 years, none of which?are adequately?reflected in current literature. Specifically, the globalization of trading relationships and the intervention of networked technologies have fundamentally changed the framework for negotiation. Things like e-auctions have altered the playing field for negotiability; communication technologies and distance have made most negotiations virtual; the growth of specialisms has rendered negotiation far more defensive and iterative (rather than holistic); and procurement practices have eroded trust and loyalty between trading partners. In addition, ERP systems have created a set of enterprise standards that create complexity for one or both sides ? the challenge of ?what happens when ERP meets ERP?.

Overall, the nature and scale of complexity that faces negotiators today means that the rationality implied by concepts such as ?positional and principled? just doesn?t exist. Even if I want to be collaborative and open, the barriers to achieving it are often simply too great. In either preparing for, or observing during, a business-to-business negotiation, I have to understand not only the personal character of the various negotiators, but also the measurements that motivate them and the ?organizational culture? that will eventually affect not only this negotiation, but also the subsequent performance of the contract. It is a complicated mix ? and rather defies the theories of specific style.

Charlottesville, VA (November 30, 2012). Researchers at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire, have found an association in the United States between a higher density of neurologists and neurosurgeons and a decreased risk of death from stroke. The findings of their study are described in the article "Association of a higher density of specialist neuroscience providers with fewer deaths from stroke in the United States population. Clinical article," by Atman Desai, M.D., and colleagues, published today online, ahead of print, in the Journal of Neurosurgery.

Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability in the United States. Given that neurologists and neurosurgeons are specialists in the field of stroke, the researchers hypothesized that there would be an association between the density of these neuroscience providers and the number of stroke-related deaths.

Desai and colleagues performed a retrospective analysis of data from the Area Resource File 2009-2010, a database containing county-level information on health care facilities and their utilization and expenditures; health care professionals and their training; and socioeconomic and environmental characteristics. Data from 3141 US counties were analyzed. The primary outcome variable was the average number of deaths from cerebrovascular disease per million population for each county during the 3-year period 2004 through 2006.The primary independent variable was the density of neuroscience providers (the combined number of neurologists and neurosurgeons per million population) in 2006.

In the 3141 US counties that were examined, the median number of deaths from stroke per million persons was 586. The median number of neuroscience providers per county was zero (0).

In an unadjusted analysis, the authors found that an increase of one neuroscience provider per million population was associated with 0.71 fewer deaths due to stroke per million population. In a multivariate analysis, in which adjustments were made for county urbanicity, socioeconomic conditions, and the density of general practitioners, an increase of one neurologist or neurosurgeon was associated with 0.38 fewer deaths from stroke per million population. Curiously, an increase in one general practitioner per million population was associated with 0.143 more stroke deaths in that population. The authors speculate that this may be due to a decreased density of neuroscience providers in counties with high numbers of general practitioners or to increased recruitment of general practitioners to high-risk locales.

The association between the density of neuroscience providers and fewer stroke deaths was present regardless of whether the county was rural or urban. Rural setting was associated with a significant increase in stroke-related deaths, whereas low level of education and persistent poverty were not significant factors.

In an editorial accompanying the article by Desai and colleagues, Fred G. Barker II, M.D., states that the most powerful finding of the report is "the much higher stroke-related mortality for rural residents." Barker points out the time-sensitive nature of stroke treatment and the lack of sophisticated stroke care in many areas. Of the 3141 counties listed in the Area Resource File, 2051 are classified as rural. Neurosurgeons are generally clustered in and around cities that house tertiary care hospitals, and thus there is large disparity in the density of neuroscience providers throughout US counties. Desai and colleagues state that timely diagnosis and intervention depend on the immediate availability of both specialties, and this is extremely important in cases of stroke.

Given the association found between the distribution of neuroscience providers and stroke-related deaths, Desai and colleagues conclude that the availability of local neurologists and neurosurgeons may be important for the overall likelihood of surviving a stroke, and thus specialist education and practice throughout the US should be promoted.

Anthropologist Spends Three Years Living With Hackers

The term "anthropologist" and its modern context and funding in the USA can be very interesting.
Terms like "Human Terrain program" should offer some counterinsurgency warfare insight vs the projected "global humanitarians".
http://thebulletin.org/web-edition/columnists/hugh-gusterson/the-us-militarys-quest-to-weaponize-culture [thebulletin.org]
The "deep hanging out" "earning their trust" "getting them to tell us about their worlds" are the classic opening moves.
David Price has a good book on this called Weaponizing Anthropology: Social Science in the Service of the Militarized State that might help.
What was once seen as college hacking, computer games, a better door lock, old movie quotes, 6 years of French and an interest in Lua, a better wheelchair interface, faster servers, community wifi, crypto is now seen by many in the US military as a new front on an internal political battlefield, - great for funding, contractors and advancement.
First you get the funding for understanding. After understanding comes influtration.
Another aspect to understanding is for internal testing. You do not want your next young crypto expert back home or in the field to ever have doubts no matter the material they are exposed to.
You want to keep your geeks happy and enjoying a living wage. Cash or an understanding of humanity from foreign embassies might fill the void in their lives wrt contractors pay or one too many night raids.
It took some time for the UK and US to understand their staff and just how and why they got turned.

Francis Ford Coppola returns to Paramount lot, home of "Godfather" series

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Legendary filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola is moving back to his creative stomping ground of the 1970s, taking offices on the Paramount lot starting next year, TheWrap has learned.

"As of 2013, Francis Ford Coppola will open offices and work out of the Paramount lot. He and Paramount go way back, and he is thrilled to be back there," said his publicist Leslee Dart in an exclusive statement to TheWrap.

An individual close to Coppola said he was looking to get "creative" and would be moving into the Lubitsch building on the lot. Studio chief Brad Grey welcomed an overture to bring Coppola back to the lot, the individual said.

Coppola made the monumental "Godfather" series with Paramount in the 1970s, at a time when studio executive Robert Evans collaborated with a group of iconic filmmakers, including Peter Bogdanovich, Hal Ashby, Terrence Malick and Roman Polanski on a series of landmark films.

Evans hired Coppola to direct the first "Godfather," which was released in 1972, with an eye to bringing Italian-American authenticity to the Mafia story. Coppola resisted for that very reason but eventually embraced the challenge and went on to make the series of films that became among the most indelible of contemporary movie history, with Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan and many others.

Coppola also made the acclaimed auteur film "The Conversation" in 1974 and "Tucker: The Man and His Dream" in 1988 with Paramount.

The filmmaker and his American Zoetrope company have been based in San Francisco for many years. Coppola has spent much time growing a vineyard and a wine business in the Napa Valley, even as his family spawned a filmmaking dynasty with daughter Sophia and son Roman becoming filmmakers in their own right.

This year Coppola executive produced "On the Road," an independent film based on the Jack Kerouac novel that premiered at Cannes and opens domestically December 21, and he made the experimental black-and-white movie "Tetro" in 2009.

Paramount today is very different from when Coppola was making "The Godfather." The studio was owned by Austrian tycoon Charles Bluhdorn, a temperamental mogul figure from central casting - the chairman of Gulf & Western - with a voracious ambition to acquire.

Come to think of it, that may not be altogether different from today, when another mogul from central casting owns Paramount, Sumner Redstone.

Paramount had no immediate comment.

Milk drinkers may yet get heart-healthy omega-3s by the glass

ScienceDaily (Nov. 29, 2012) ? Not everyone has a taste for fish, even though it is a natural source of heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids.

And while a growing number of omega-3 enriched foods may net health benefits for people who resist the lure of salmon or sashimi, milk remains the product that has gotten away in what has become a billion-dollar health industry.

But now, food science researchers at Virginia Tech may have reeled milk into the omega-3 delivery system, showing it is possible to incorporate fish oil into milk and dairy-based beverages in amounts sufficient to promote heart health, without destroying the product's taste or limiting its lifespan.

Even better, the milk passes the sniff test. Twenty-five volunteers evaluated one-ounce cups of standard 2 percent milk alongside samples of skim milk containing 78 parts butter oil to 22 parts fish oil in institutionally approved study conditions.

"We couldn't find any aroma differences," said Susan E. Duncan, a professor of food science and technology in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. "We were concerned the fish oil would undergo a chemical process called oxidation, which would shorten the milk's shelf life, or the milk would acquire a cardboard or paint flavor by reacting with the fish oil. It appears we have a product that is stable, with no chemical taste or smell issues."

The study, featured in the November issue of the Journal of Dairy Science, tested four different ratios of butter oil to fish oil in the production of pasteurized, fatty acid-fortified beverages.

The aroma-free formulation delivered 432 milligrams of heart-healthy fatty acids per cup, close to the 500 milligram daily target for healthy people suggested by a broad range of health studies. The U.S. Department of Agriculture suggests daily consumption of 250 milligrams per day in healthy adults.

Research has shown omega-3 fatty acids are helpful for preventing coronary disease, reducing inflammation, assisting infant brain development, and maintaining brain function.

Meanwhile, the American Heart Association recommends eating two servings of fatty fish per week, citing research that has shown omega-3 fatty acids decrease the risk of potentially fatal heart arrhythmias, decrease triglyceride levels, slow growth of atherosclerotic plaque, and slightly lower blood pressure.

But fish hasn't caught on with everyone, making room for new foods and beverages fortified with omega-3s in an expanding marketplace. Sales are expected to reach more than $3 billion in 2016, according to marketing analysts.

"I think the dairy industry can look at our study and determine whether it is plausible to modify its products," Duncan said. "I would like to help people who love milk, yogurt, and dairy, which have intrinsic nutritional value, address an additional need in their diets, especially if they don't like to eat fish or can't afford it. One of these dairy servings a day apparently is enough to sustain enough continuous omega-3 to benefit heart health."

If such a product catches on with consumers, Duncan said the next step for researchers is to follow groups of volunteers in an epidemiological study of whether the food improves health outcomes.

"Milk was first fortified with Vitamin D as a way to fight rickets -- a disease that leads to soft or weak bones," said Kerry E. Kaylegian, a dairy foods research and extension associate with Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences, who was not involved in the research. "It was a good approach to address a dietary deficiency disease, because so many people drink milk, which is already loaded with nutrients. This study describes fortification of milk with omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA. We can't say lack of those compounds definitively causes cardiac disease, but there is evidence that they protect us and contribute to heart and brain health. Milk would be a good delivery vehicle for those nutrients."

Would You Give Up Marriage for an Annual Agreement? | Escape ...

Posted by Lisa Hayes on Nov 28, 2012 in break up, divorce, law of attraction, marriage, marriage trouble, relationships |

LOA Relationship CoachBy Lisa Hayes

?

Let?s face it. ??We all know ?till death do us part? is not a mandate. ??It?s not the law. ??It?s not a given. ??In our culture, whether we want to admit it or not, marriages are not necessarily permanent. ??They certainly aren?t disposable. ?However, there is a thing called divorce and many of us myself included, have had one. ?

My question to you is this. ??Would you be willing to trade in a lifetime commitment, till death do us part, for an annual agreement? ??What if you negotiated a deal to be together a year at a time? ??Then at the end of the year you decided if you wanted to re-up or renew? ?Now I know that obvious things like kids and property make that idea much more complicated. ??However, it?s still negotiable. ?

I have to believe that two people who knew they had to renew a contract at the end of the year might tend to stay engaged in a relationship. ??It would be less likely to take your partner for granted. ??It seems like the relationship would be unlikely to become stale. ???If there is one thing that can tank a relationship it?s complacency. ?

An annual agreement would force a couple to stay current with each other. ??To some degree the magic of courting could never end. ??Problems would have to be dealt with in a timely manner or they could affect contract negotiations. ??

An annual agreement would make it impossible to ignore resentments and unhappiness for years at a time. ??It would cause a couple to have to revisit and revisit again their values and priorities. ??Chances are high they would have to have at least annual conversations about hot button topics like money and sex.

They would be forced to ask themselves and answer the question, ?Is this working??

The concept of permanence tends to reduce joy. ?It?s human nature to notice something less if you think it?s going to be around forever. ?We put less effort into something that?s guaranteed. ??For many people the idea of dumping the institution of marriage would be offensive. ?But here?s the reality, everything is temporary. ??Everything is finite. ??Anything is possible. ??Marriage is nothing to take for granted. ?

I encourage you to consider your marriage will be richer if you treat it as a choice and not a mandate. ??Energy goes where attention flows.? Treat your marriage as if your time with your beloved was very short and chances are greater it will last a lifetime.? (Tweetable!)?

Tibetan protests against Chinese rule in new phase (AP)

Tibetan protests against Chinese rule in new phase

By CHRISTOPHER BODEEN | Associated Press

BEIJING (AP) ? Two dozen Tibetans have set themselves on fire in western China this month in a marked acceleration of the protests against authoritarian Chinese rule, activist groups say.

The surge in self-immolations, along with an increase in large demonstrations, mark a new phase in the Tibetan protests.

At least 86 people have set themselves on fire since the immolations began in 2009. In a change since the early months, most self-immolators now are lay people ? some of them acting together ? rather than Buddhist monks and nuns who can be more closely watched by the authorities because they live in tightly monitored monasteries.

The protests have also sought to avoid direct attacks on authorities and damage to government property, acts used in past to label them as riots or terrorism, providing an excuse for greater oppression. Despite the altered approach, observers see little short-term possibility of Beijing changing its repressive policies.

?I think the problem will just escalate over time. The government shows no inclination to respond positively to recommendations for reform from the outside or Tibetans,? said Michael Davis, a law professor and expert on Tibet at the University of Hong Kong.

In the latest immolation, 24-year-old Kalsang Kyab doused himself with kerosene and set himself alight Tuesday in front of local government offices in Kyangtsa in Aba prefecture, a hotbed of unrest, according to London-based Free Tibet and other groups.

An Aba county official said Wednesday he was aware of the immolations but refused to give any details before hanging up.

On Monday, about 1,000 students at a Tsolho Medical Institute staged a bold protest about 900 kilometers (550 miles) to the north in Hainan prefecture in Qinghai province. Riot police fired shots into the air and released tear gas and beat the students with rifle butts, sending 20 students to the hospital, some with serious injuries, Free Tibet reported. Four students were detained as of Tuesday, according to U.S.-funded broadcaster Radio Free Asia.

Tibetan and surrounding ethnically Tibetan regions have been closed off to most outsiders, and firsthand information from the area is extremely difficult to obtain. Authorities have not commented on the protest. Calls to the medical school rang unanswered on Wednesday.

Driving the students to protest was a booklet distributed by authorities that derided the Tibetan language as irrelevant, attacked the exiled Tibetan leader the Dalai Lama, and condemned the immolation protests by Tibetans as ?acts of stupidity.?

The booklet is the latest in a series of perceived slights and intrusive measures by Chinese authorities that have left Tibetans feeling that the culture, language and Buddhist religion that are at the core of their identity are under threat. The feelings have also driven the immolations.

The combination of immolations and large-scale protests is posing a new challenge for security forces, which have been stationed in large numbers in Tibetan areas in recent years.

The surge in self-immolations represents an awareness of the impact they are having among the Tibetan community and internationally, said Robbie Barnett, a Tibet expert at New York?s Columbia University. That would likely inspire further protests, increasing the numbers of Tibetans willing to take their lives for the sake of their community, he said.

Most self-immolators have doused themselves with gasoline and set themselves alight after shouting slogans calling for Tibetan independence and blessings for the Dalai Lama, who fled to India in 1959 as Chinese troops ? a decade after they occupied the region ? were crushing an anti-government uprising.

Though protests have flared periodically over the decades, tensions boiled over in 2008, when deadly rioting broke out in the capital, Lhasa, and sparked an uprising across large swaths of ethnically Tibetan areas. Since then, security ? already extremely tight ? has been smothering.

The immolations have galvanized many Tibetans, who see them as selfless acts of sacrifice, making it hard for authorities to denounce the immolators. Similarly, protests by students are hard to demonize since they are typically non-violent and centered on issues such as language rights that are guaranteed under the Chinese Constitution.

While local authorities have cracked down hard following self-immolations and other protests, authorities in Beijing have said relatively little other than to issue routine denunciations of the Dalai Lama and his followers. That indicates they are uncertain how to respond in a way that would bolster their authority and prevent the acts of defiance snow-balling into a full-blown protest movement, Barnett said.

?This suggests that the Tibetans have found a way of at least getting under the skin of the authorities,? he said.
