TRAVERSE CITY -- Denine Dingeman, designer & General Manager of?Habitat for Humanity ReStore, shares her inspiration and teaches you to affordably style with ease! She's teaming up with Dan Brady, "tricks-of-the-trade" painter at?Dan Brady Painting and Wood Restoration. He brings you time-saving tricks and products that are easy to find and use.

In this week's Upnorthlive ReVibe, Dan and Denine show us how to create a chalkboard from an unused, ugly door.

"Dan shows you how simple it is to follow your creativity and create a fun focal point with texture and personality," said Denine. "As Dan shows you here, you shouldn't be afraid to let your ideas take shape. It's okay to have some fun as you mix your personal style with function."

DAN'S TRICK OF THE DAY: "Old doors are easy to find, and your local Habitat for Humanity ReStore has MANY to choose from," said Dan. "There are a variety of things to create, and it's easier than you think to perk up an ugly door. Just follow my lead as I apply the design tips I got from Denine! It's just my style, and I'm really glad that I gave it a shot. And this is only the beginning of my creative expression? I'm going unhinged!"

Create a chalkboard from an unused door:

1. Select a door that's unique, fits your style, and has solid surfaces (even if it's an ugly color when you discover it). Clean peeling paint and repair nicks to the area to become a chalkboard.

2. Using a sanding sponge, scuff the surface to be painted or stained. Clean any dust.

3. Using FrogTape, tape off the edge areas to be painted as a chalkboard.

4. Using ChalkBoard paint from Northwood Paint or your favorite home improvement store, apply the paint to the chalkboard areas with a "hot dog" roller. If you ask, service crew at the store will set you up with these tools.

5. For a natural wood grain finish on a previously stained door, use "Restor-a-Finish" in the tone you prefer. Apply the finish as indicated, and ask your friends at Northwood (or any home improvement store) to help you with any personal suggestions. Application is relatively fast and easy, and you'll be excited to show off your finished project!

DESIGNER DENINE'S SECRET TIP: "For a really bright chalk impression, spray your dry chalkboard with window cleaner and write or draw on the chalkboard while the surface is wet," said Denine. "You'll love the brilliance!"
