Business organisations and individuals can do more to support ...

01-15-2013

After a familiar conversation today with a connection about the lack of young people moving in to engineering, mechanical, science based roles and the long term recruitment/growth issues for those sectors not to mention the concerns of the ?Employability Skills? of some young people leaving education. I thought I might share this with you;

The reason young people are not signposted to the opportunities with recruiting/growing sectors are many (lack of information, division in apprenticeships v?s higher education, false expectations, organisations moving away from traditional recruitment methods, I could go on), all of which is exasperated because of the government cuts to the careers service (?patchy? as it may have been) the removal of the statutory duty upon schools to provide careers education and more than 169,000,00 careers advice resources for young people on Google; mind blowing!

I genuinely fear for our young people and for the general success of our future economy.

But, it is not all helpless, for me there is a really clear solution and that is: More businesses to take an active role in youth engagement.? There are many things an organisation of any size can do to support our schools and young people, even individuals who have only a little time on their hands and the desire to ?give? something back can make a significant difference.

I have listed below my top 10, some come with a cost and others are free (excluding time), all have proven to inspire, motivate and support young people.

As an organisation there are many benefits, not least investing in the future workforce/consumer market but CSR, Training, Development, Marketing and so on.

But like all things finding what, who, how, why or when can be troublesome and time consuming, there are hundreds of government organisations, charities, private companies that can help you engage with? schools and young people so where to start?? The answer to that question is one of the founding reasons Youth Employment UK CIC was established and why it is number 10 on our list.

Youth Employment UK CIC was set up to help young people navigate the world of careers and pathways and to work with UK employers to help them engage young people through many of the channels listed below.? Underpinning all of this is our Youth Charter and all of our members (including 16-24 year olds) are asked to Step Up and sign the Youth Charter and show a commitment developing skills, behaviours and attitudes to support youth employment.

We are already working with youth organisations that share our objectives, developing relationships that allow for better collaboration and coordination and most importantly avoiding the fragmentation of initiatives thus ensuring the best outcomes for young people.

So if you want to make a difference and want to connect with the people that can help you and are ready to Step Up to a Youth Charter then please take the time to look at our site www.yeuk.org.uk we have a long way to go but with the support of like-minded organisations we believe that together we can challenge youth unemployment and the skills gap.
